#1 – The Reluctant Detective
"Couldn’t resist touching the body, eh?" observed Ben. Faith was defiant. "I had to check for a pulse." Faith Morgan may have quit the world of crime, but crime won’t let her go. The ex-policewoman has retrained as a priest, disillusioned with a tough police culture and convinced that she can do more good this way. But now her worlds collide. Searching for the first posting of her new career, she witnesses a sudden and shocking death in a quiet Hampshire village. And of all people, Detective Inspector Ben Shorter, her former colleague and boyfriend, shows up to investigate the crime. Persuaded to stay on in Little Worthy, she learns surprising details about the victim and starts to piece together a motive for his death. But is she now in danger herself? And what should she do about Ben? Then a further horrifying event deepens the mystery…
#2 – The Advent of Murder
Faith Morgan, former policewoman and vicar of Little Worthy, visits Oliver Markham’s farm in the run up to Christmas, only to discover the house surrounded by police cars. A body has been found in the local River Itchen, which turns out to be that of Lucas Kemp, a local boy and chorister. Markham is charged with his murder. Through her connections with Winchester Cathedral Faith is drawn into the investigation, discovering that Lucas had dropped out of college and that his mother had died a few months previously. There is a question of drugs, and a rivalry over Lucas’s distraught girlfriend – the choir is a hotbed of tensions. Lucas’s unsavoury uncle, and a local drug dealer, both come under suspicion, and Ben, Faith’s police inspector ex-boyfriend, has to rescue her when the drug dealer turns nasty. But the actual murderer is none of the above …
#3 – A Saintly Killing
It is late July, the run up to St James’s Day. It is also the 1000th anniversary of the church at Little Worthy, and Faith Morgan has planned a whole range of celebratory activities – a music festival; a photographic booklet of recent history; a planting of new trees in the graveyard and vicarage garden; bell ringing; a visit from the bishop. A new painting of the church is commissioned from distinguished local artist Sal Hankley. Sal, who has recently returned from Australia, is not a universally popular choice: outspoken and opinionated, she has made her share of enemies. Before the painting can be completed, Sal is found dead at her easel on a hillock overlooking the church. Suddenly a very respectable member of the community – a PCC member, no less – is under suspicion. Faith – trying to hold church and village together – finds herself teamed with former lover Detective Inspector Ben Shorter (who has no more time for art than God).
