Everything about his life is routinized and predictable, until he meets a woman and her two children who have recently moved to the area. His first meeting with the woman and her teen-aged son occurs at the police station on the mainland, where he’s asked to evaluate the boy in an incident that involves drugs at school. After hearing about what the woman and her kids have recently gone through, Mayer takes the boy on as a client, hoping to be able to help him adjust to his new environment and to cope with his and his family’s traumatic loss.
What Roman doesn’t expect is the profound impact that the woman and her two children will have on him, and on others in the community…even though the woman inadvertently brings trouble with her, where a part of her past involves someone who has evil intentions toward her. And Roman doesn’t seem to be able to escape a former client’s growing obsession with him.
