Overview: The year is 902, Alric the head man of the Douglas Valley leads mounted warriors to investigate rumours of a Viking invasion force off the Wirral peninsular in the Mersey estuary. Saxon scouts of the Mercian army ride to Chester, to warn of a Viking invasion. The story then goes back to the events in the Viking slave port of Dublin. The hero of the story is a Viking warrior by the name of Skjaldmarr who organises his comrades to keep a watchful eye on the surrounding countryside having heard the Irish tribes were mobilising their fighting men. Skjaldmarr prepares for the Siege of Dublin, which at this time is under the rule of Hingamund, self-styled King of Dublin. It is revealed by Skjaldmarr’s scouts that Dublin is facing an army of over five thousand warriors from all the Irish provinces, to finally rid Ireland of the Vikings. The Irish attack Dublin with waves of ferocity and inflict many losses. With defeat staring the Viking’s in the face, the evacuation of Dublin is planned by Skjaldmarr, the Viking ships leave for the Wirral peninsular in North Mercia.
The story later moves to Wessex. Politics in what would become England were in turmoil after the death of Alfred the Great in 899. Alfred’s daughter Aethelfled controlled the Earldom of Mercia. His son Edward the Elder was King of Wessex. Aethelwold, Alfred’s nephew felt he should be King has a violent row with Edward. This causes Edward to banish Aethelwold who flees to Jorvik (York) main city of Northumbria where they make him King. He then leads an army of rebel Saxons, Vikings and Northumbrians against Wessex. The fallout from this means Skjaldmarr and his new friends are once again in the midst of conflict. This is the story of people trying to escape war and persecution to build a bright new future for their families but the troubles of this turbulent era seem to have followed them.
