Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris.
Requirements: CBR Reader, 1.41 GB
Overview: The world’s lone superhero, known as the Great Machine, officially retired from crime fighting in June, 2001 in order to run for the office of Mayor of New York City. In the Eisner Award-winning Ex Machina: The First Hundred Days, the Great Machine, who has the ability to "talk" to electrical devices (from his office computer to the New York power grid), assumes public office, struggles to balance the budget, and settles a first amendment dispute at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

EX MACHINA is far from a traditional "cape and tights" adventure story. It is: a sophisticated superhero story for readers who are skeptical of anyone who can jump over a building in a single bound; a science fiction story for readers who are weary of gadgets and gizmos overwhelming character development; a New York story for anyone who thinks all the great New York stories have been told; and most of all, it is a story that will fascinate, stimulate, surprise, and shock its readers.

The series won the 2005 Eisner Award for Best New Series. Brian K. Vaughan won the Best Writer Award that year in part for his work on Ex Machina.

Genre: COmics, Superhero, Digital, Mature Reader.

    Published by Wildstorm, 2004-2010.

Ex Machina launched in 2004 as part of DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint. The series ended in August 2010 with issue fifty.

The title of the comic comes from the Latin phrase ‘deus ex machina’, and is also a reference to Hundred’s superhero persona, the Great Machine, in that he is now an ‘ex-Machine’. In the first issue, Mitchell explains that he chose the name "Great Machine" based on a quote about society by Thomas Jefferson. Accordingly, one of the series’ recurring themes is the tendency of citizens to become overly reliant on their government and constantly expect it to save them.

Vaughan has said that the comic was "born out of my anger with what passes for our current political leadership (on both sides of the aisle)".
Vaughan has admitted seeing the series as a means to explore real-world contemporary politics as well, but states that discussing themes overtly is not something he prefers.

"First Hundred Days are great." Reviewed by Silkcuts on Aug. 9, 2010.

Brian K. Vaughn (BKV) maybe best known for his Y: The Last Man series over at Vertigo or for the creation of The Runaways at Marvel. Ex Machina joins those too as one of his most important works of art. Ex Machina is his political statement and he making bold statements along the way.

Ex Machina, great title for a smart book. First off its a play on words, Ex Machina (or Ex Machine). Secondly its a Latin phrase which means "god out of the machine". Mitch Hundred, the main character of the series is that, a God out of the machine. We learn in this trade about his powers and who he is.

The cover didn’t sell me… it was actually a turn off for me, but the interior art sings. Tony Harris has a way of doing his art with a computer touch that gives any book he works on his own signature. Tony Harris may be most famous for his work on the Starman series written by James Robinson. If you liked that series, art wise this maybe the closest thing to new Starman.

This series has become a major work from BKV. Finishing at 50 issue, plus the 4 special issues. This is the first Trade of a celebrated and recommended series.

          5/5 Stars
          Cheers!
