Overview: Caroline Akrill is different from most pony book writers in two ways. Firstly she tends to write for a much older readership, mid teens to adult (although most can be read by younger readers). Secondly her books are very funny. Strangely, considering the potential for farce in the world of the horse, humourous pony books are a rarity but Ms. Akrill manages hers with a light touch.
Her most well known work is the Eventing Trilogy, but she wrote a number of other books and also many horse-related articles and short stories in magazines and annuals. As well as writing she has had a very varied career. Famously quoted as having said she has tried and failed most things, she has certainly not failed in her writing career, with her books being amongst the favourite pony stories of many readers.
Genre: Fiction > Children/Young Adult
Eventer’s Dream (Eventing Trilogy Book 1): Elaine has a burning ambition to be an event rider but first she needs a sponsor, a suitable horse, and somewhere to keep it. A job in a private yard or livery stable seems a logical step but numerous unsuccessful interviews leave her feeling desperate. As a stopgap she accepts a position with the impecunious and eccentric Fane sisters, caring for their stable of pathetic, unsound, aged and often downright dangerous horses at their once grand but now ruinously dilapidated manor house in High Suffolk. But when the perfect job opportunity presents itself can she actually free herself from the Fane sisters? And can she bear to leave the stable of hopelessly endearing equines to their fate? Is this job really the first step towards achieving her ambition? Or is it the end, the absolute finish, of an eventer’s dream?
Amazon review: "If you love British humor and horse-related books set in the British countryside, this novel is for you! The aspiring eventer of the title, a teenager named Elaine, makes the hilariously imprudent decision to cast her lot with the Fane sisters, a group of struggling, dotty old women trying to run a livery stable. To keep creditors at bay, the Fanes rent out their horses (all of whom are either homicidally unsafe or chronically unsound) and sell various antiques from the corners of their sprawling, shabby, once-magnificent home.
The humour is quintessentially British, the writing crisp and literate and the story full of fun."
A Hoof in the Door (Eventing Trilogy Book 2): Elaine has found her potential event horse and her career is being sponsored by the impecunious and eccentric Fane sisters. But there is professional training to pay for and equipment and saddlery to buy and the Fanes, naturally, are short of cash. Caroline Akrill gives an authentic and often hilarious insight into the world of horses she knows so well as totally unsuitable horses from the Fanes’ notoriously awful livery yard are pressed into events and competitions, ranging from the local Point-to-Point to the dignified elegance of the show ring, in the relentless pursuit of prize money to finance the training of the event horse. Just as they are beginning to realise that no amount of prize money will be sufficient for their needs, a golden opportunity for professional training presents itself only to end in catastrophe. Will Elaine and Another Legend ever get to the starting post?
