Overview: Sergeant Dean Reyes is a cop from the Chicago suburbs who gets caught up in a shooting incident in south Chicago and gets suspended, pending the outcome of an investigation and the political fallout that ensues.
While on suspension, the world is hit with a series of coronal mass ejections that produce EMP’s so strong that all power, motorized vehicles, and electrical devices are knocked out. Governments at all levels fall apart, and there is no reason to believe they can come back for years to come. The economies of the world are knocked back into virtually the 18th century.
Reyes has no stock of supplies in his home, and no close personal attachments left, so he has a decision to make- stay home and hope he can survive what he fears will be a mass exodus from Chicago that could overrun his suburban community; or, escape south to the countryside of central Illinois to try to find somewhere he can survive.
He does have one advantage- he’s a not just an experienced cop, he’s also a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, and he has retained critical skills and experiences that he can call on to survive- but he’s on his own, for now.
Reyes’ struggles and conflicts are grueling, and his survival skills are repeatedly put to the test.
This standalone novel is a very realistic post-apocalyptic survival story with no artifices- no zombies, no magic powers, and no stocked bunkers to escape to.
