Overview: Elias is the sixth in a line of Makarska men who have served in militia, army and police roles in New Zealand since his Croatian ancestor arrived in 1902. Now he’s retired, but he keeps his finger on the pulse. The new chief of police is a career man, and the two are often at loggerheads when Elias wants to get things done.
Between them, Elias and Aunt B (for Beatrice, who runs the Potter’s Rest cafe), keep the small town of Tawhiti running smoothly. But things start to change. While Elias is rescuing a battered wife, and getting a street kid away from a local gang, he learns that an Auckland Triad is interested in the area.
Why are they interested? What should he do with a street kid with nowhere to live? And Aunt B’s friend Annabel seems to be taking an interest in him – how is he going to cope with that?
Then things get really serious. Elias has to call in some high-powered friends, and take up arms, to protect his town.
