§ Edmund’s father, Charles Blair Leighton was a portrait and subject painter who studied at the Royal Academy.
§ After his father died, Edmund attended a boarding school in St. John’s Wood.
§ Leighton studied at the University Collage School between 1864-1867.
§ After finishing high school, he worked in the tea business to help support his mother and two sisters.
§ Leighton took night classes at the South Kensington School of Art and Heatherley’s School of Art before gaining entry to a five year program at the Royal Academy of Art School in 1874.
§ During college he worked as an illustrator for Cassel and Co., as well as magazine work for Harper’s Baazar.
§ In 1878, he became a member of the Langham Sketch Club, and in 1880, served as its president.
§ Leighton was elected to The Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1887.
§ Leighton exhibited at the Royal Academy for over forty years.
