1. Planting Evidence – There I was, minding my own business, when I had to go and ruin it by being curious.
Interior decorating jobs aren’t usually dangerous. I mean, unless you count carrying in heavy pottery or touching up ceiling paint from a twelve-foot ladder. But for the most part, things are pretty routine.
Then one day, I see something odd outside my client’s condo. Being a plant lover, it’s only natural I’d watch to see what the gardener was placing in the planter bed—at twilight, no less.
But although I have no idea what it is, the object is definitely not anything alive, green, or even visible above the soil that he hastily pats down over it.
Like I said, I get curious.
Just like I get curious about a certain handsome photographer on the condo grounds. Even though his klutzy fall into an innocent shrub crushed some blossoms, his deep blue eyes and killer dimples are making me overlook the plant injury. Since my divorce, I’ve been as drought-tolerant as a local cactus, and this dry spell has me in need of a good watering.
So maybe being curious won’t turn out so bad. At least, that’s what I tell myself when I agree to a date…and dig up the package that the mystery person buried in the ground. But maybe I should’ve let buried packages lie.
2. Rooting Out The Truth – I never thought doing an interior decorating job would mean I’d be taking care of my clients’ cannabis plants. Medicinal, of course, but still. I also wasn’t anticipating their cat. It has an uncanny ability to show up at timely moments and scare the crap out of me. This job can be a little crazy.
But just as I’m trying to weed out how best to design my clients’ new rooms and look after their Mary Jane and curious feline, I get sucked into a search for hidden gold. You know what it’s like searching for gold in the desert? It’s hot.
How do I get myself into these situations?
At least my new romance is getting off and running.
…That is until my boyfriend’s conniving ex-wife shows up unexpectedly—with jealousy in her eyes and sabotage on her mind. Great.
As if that’s not enough of a cactus barb in my side, my ex suddenly decides that he and I should get back together. Insert eye roll.
Is there some sort of strange pollen floating around? Because it’s not just the exes stirring up trouble. There’s also a strange vehicle hanging around my neighborhood and I can’t help but wonder if it’s because of me.
It’s springtime in the desert and all kinds of thing are sprouting, including questions about what the heck is going on around here. I have to figure things out and uncover some truths before time runs out. They say curiosity kills the cat, but I sure hope it’s not while on my watch.
3. Growing Suspicions – Believe me, I didn’t plan to get caught up in another scenario that involved someone with criminal tendencies… Especially since I assured my boyfriend, Jake, that there was no reason to worry about me while he’s away on his road trip photography job.
I only intended to distract myself by adding a harmless side gig to my latest interior decorating project. And what better way could there be than to assist my client and private investigator friend, Bonnie, on one of her cases? It would be a win-win; while I’m designing the remodeling of her casita, I’d help Bonnie find out why the handsome manager of the local fitness center is behaving so strangely.
Well, that was the plan–before it grew into something much more complicated. And dangerous. Like a virulent vine of poison ivy that’s choking any other plant in its path, a sinister, revenge-seeking egomaniac is on the scene, and he’s intent on ruining innocent lives.
So, what’s a small-town interior designer and amateur crime-fighter to do? For starters, recruit Bonnie and a small band of local characters to help–including my old high school boyfriend and his brother, my elderly side-kick neighbor and a card shark gambler, to name a few.
Together, we’ve got to dig up enough incriminating dirt on the bad guy to put him behind bars… And not the kind where he’s usually serving cocktails. But it’s not long before we realize we may be in way over our heads, and that we’re going to need a large dose of Lady Luck to have the winning hand in this high-stakes game.
