Overview: Bernard Wilkerson is an Irish-American writer and author of The Worlds of the Dead series. His interest in writing about the Afterlife grew from his genealogy hobby when musings about what his ancestors might be up to turned into rampant speculations and wild imaginings and he had to write some of them down.
Genre: Science Ficiton
Defeat: An alien shuttle vanishes from its landing spot outside the United Nations. Minutes later, communications satellites plummet from the sky all around earth. Nuclear warheads launch. The human weapons — targeted at other humans — bring on the expected devastation, but no one expected the kind of firepower the alien Hrwang would harness. Within hours, Earth changes forever.
So, too, do the lives of survivors. Astronauts on a mission to Mars, aware of the Hrwang but unaware of the attack, try to figure out why they can’t communicate with Earth. A German man leading American soldiers on a mountain hike witnesses the mushroom cloud that destroys the city where he lives. An Air Force Captain on the Pacific coast alerts her commanders of suspicious movements by the Hrwang, but her base’s proximity to the ocean leaves her in a kind of danger she never imagined. Teen sisters on a mountain getaway with their father will have to deal with the alien threat, but first, they’ll see some of the worst of humanity.
Flight: A devastating attack by the strangely human Hrwang leaves the Earth eerily quiet. No cellphones. No broadcasts. No electric power. Survivors scramble to find safety in the aftermath. German hiking club leader Wolfgang Riebe, still grieving the loss of his wife and daughter, finds his fate tied to a group of American soldiers and a Swiss woman named Leah. An attack on their vehicle leaves the group wary, leading to a heart-wrenching moral test when they encounter someone the Americans suspect was in on the ambush.
Meanwhile, Jayla continues her quest to find safety and medical help for her sister Jada. Their exploration of a crumpled landscape begins to give Jayla clues about the extent of the destruction.
In Utah, Eva and Mark encounter a makeshift group of inexperienced soldiers manning a checkpoint. The encounter opens their eyes, but they will face a much greater threat as they make their way to Las Vegas in an effort to find a way to fight back against the Hrwang.
Capt. Stanley Russell, leader of a United Nations vessel orbiting Mars, knows nothing of the chaos on Earth. That changes when he and his second-in-command are asked to board a Hrwang vessel to speak with a leader. The leader reveals that the Hrwang consider themselves to be every bit as human as Stanley, and they ask him a question that sends his mind spinning.
Maneuvers:The world promises to get darker. Precision asteroid attacks by the Hrwang devastate Earth’s leadership. Survivors in tsunami-wiped "sunny" California haven’t seen the sun for days on end. Electricity and fuel are precious and scarce. No one on the surface of the planet can see just how bleak the full picture looks because they can’t see into space.
Hrwang commanders, orbiting in gargantuan ships, are preparing for a ground assault by awakening a massive army from its 2 1/2-year slumber through interstellar space.
Two humans have interacted directly with the Hrwang without dying. Stanley Russell believes he can turn around the conflict after accepting an ambassadorship from the Hrwang commander. Russell’s second-in-command, Irina Samovitch, clearly doesn’t share his optimism or visions of glory. For now, both are headed back to Earth tasked with reaching the United Nations, where the Hrwang seem to be saying they were attacked.
What do they mean by that, anyway? How could humans have been so stupid as to attack aliens who obviously have far better technology? Perhaps Russell and Samovitch will find some answers in New York. Maybe Eva Gilliam and Juan de la Serda will uncover some truth in California, where she captured video of alien aircraft appearing over an observatory. Gilliam clearly has a plan in mind. She won’t go down without a fight, even if it’s only a symbolic one.
Bernard Wilkerson’s third installment of the Hrwang series hints at darker days ahead for humanity.
