Earth is the Strangest Planet: Ten Stories of Science Fiction by Robert Silverberg, Nelson S. Bond, R. A. Lafferty, H. G. Wells, Brian W. Aldiss, Raymond Z. Gallun, Harry Harrison, Avram Davidson, P. Schuyler Miller, Robert Abernathy

Overview: The last refuge of a sf anthologist: a collection dedicated to terra firma–but what a delightful collection! The piece de resistance is H. G. Wells’ flawless ""The Empire of the Ants."" More dated but still pleasurable: some cullings from the mid-Thirties’ Astounding. From the Golden Age: a neatly turned Robert Abernathy on the sinister armies in the backyard pond and Avram Davidson’s sly hypothesis about the secret biologies of lost safety pins and coat-hangers. The most recent contributions are Brian Aldiss’ very funny outbreak of ""time gas,"" one of R. A. Lafferty’s most glorious revenge-of-the-Indian fables, and Silverberg’s own razor-edged trifle about an oddly familiar society in search of bigger and better apocalypses. This young old pro can anthologize rings around practically anybody, including Saturn.
