Overview: Liz is old, even by vampiric standards. After a mysterious five-month absence, she returns to The Sanctuary, her current home. The outside world belongs to the humans while creatures like herself are confined inside slum-like camps that once promised peace and protection but now only serves as prisons. Inside The Sanctuary, provisions are scarce, and violence is rampant.
Liz returns, assuming nothing has changed in her brief absence, after all, five months is a blink of an eye to an immortal but she quickly realizes that more has changed than she could ever have feared.
The Sanctuary is on the brink of rebellion and Liz finds her former lover, Vendela at the heart of it. Having sworn never to meddle in the affairs of humans again, Liz tries to remain indifferent, forming an unlikely friendship with Katarina, a Seer and dabbler in witchcraft.
As tensions escalate within The Sanctuary, Liz must confront how far she’s willing to go to honor her promise to stay uninvolved, even if it means watching everyone she loves die.
