1. Dead Pretty
When a local woman is killed, police indifference leads a doctor to begin her own investigation.

It is not unusual for Callie Hughes to see a dead body. As a part-time police doctor, she has seen more than most. And it was hardly unusual for her to be called in to a reported drugs overdose. Her work as a forensic physician in Hastings has led her to see a fair few of those.

But the corpse of the young woman that she is now examining isn’t surrounded by the typical drug paraphernalia; the room lacks the squalor she might expect to see. What the corpse does have, is a faint mark around the neck. It might easily have gone unnoticed, but once she’s seen it, Dr Callie Hughes can’t get the idea out of her head that she is looking at the victim of a strangling.

Hughes returns to her other job as a local GP, but after she discovers on the grapevine that the victim was in fact murdered, her curiosity gets the better of her. Unfortunately, the local police do not take kindly to her interest. And she can’t help but think that the victim being a prostitute has something to do with their lack of concern.

Soon Hughes will be called to another victim killed in similar circumstances. Her medical knowledge will give her unique insight into the killer, but convincing the police of her input’s value will be a challenge. And her naturally inquisitive character may well lead her into danger. Can Hughes hunt down a killer terrorising local women, or will her curiosity make her a victim?

3. Guilty Party
Curiosity about a strangled lawyer leads police doctor Callie Hughes along a bumpy road to the truth.

When a lawyer is found dead in his home, the circumstances are indeed strange, if not wholly suspicious. An act of auto-eroticisation has gone terribly wrong, leading to an unintended climax to his life.

It is only after another lawyer is found dead in his former boss’s pool that Dr Callie Hughes begins to suspect there is more to the deaths. But she can’t act on her instincts until the pathology reports are filed.

What she can do is explore the men’s respective backgrounds. Both having worked in the justice system, there are more than a few disgruntled individuals who could have wanted them dead. The challenge will be finding one connected to both men.

Juggling her work as a forensic pathologist and part-time GP, Callie risks overstepping the mark when it comes to investigating the case. But her instincts have been proven right in the past. And when another lawyer is publicly humiliated, she begins to develop a theory.

Whilst the police may have seen her meddling as a hindrance in the past, when the strange antics in the coastal town of Hastings continue, in more ways than one they’ll be grateful that through her sleuthing, she has closed in on the killer.

4. Vital Signs
A forensic physician fuels political uproar when she sticks to her findings.

When bodies of immigrants begin to wash up on a Hastings beach, no one would envy police doctor Callie Hughes’ sad job of checking for vital signs or pronouncing death.

Hughes works alongside detectives DI Miller and DS Jeffries, slowly cataloguing some dozen deaths from a boat suspected to have capsized during an illegal crossing from France to England. But one victim stands out to Hughes. Body number nine. It has several characteristics that mark it as different from the others. Could it be the body of a people smuggler?

Despite Dr Hughes having supplied crucial information about previous homicides, Miller and Jeffries are quick to dismiss her theories. But without their backup, will her desire to get to the bottom of the case land her in deep trouble?
