“Here we are.”
They are opposite a dirty-looking building, low; with an opening on one side where there is a gate; clearly a yard which serves also as a terrace.
They stop the car. Look at each other. Look for a long time.
“Right?”
Brooke asks, softly. She leans across, takes Jo’s hand. Jo feels her heart lift in her chest like a salmon breaching the waves. Breathes in. Squeezes Brooke’s hand back.
