1. The Merciless Dead
What happens when sentiment turns sinister…
Beth Crichton, a PR Officer, has been appointed to work with Ross Foundation. Though excited about the prospect of restoring a Highland croft, which used to be in the Ross Family before they were driven from the Clearances, she is far from surprised as sinister events start to unfold.
The restoration works are being funded by a wealthy overseas descendant who is intent on rebuilding his ancestors’ home. Beth and other experts employed to authenticate and replicate many of the artefacts, find themselves reaching out to Detective Inspector Leslie Gunn, a former historical expert. In fact, Mrs Morwenna Ross insists upon DI Gunn being consulted.
As the race to authenticate and regenerate the ancestral home unfolds, it soon becomes apparent that a rather valuable piece is missing … The Ross Tapestry. Caught up in their tasks, the experts are shocked to hear of a death nearby. When DCI Jack Rutherford begins his enquiries, the seriousness of the crime unnerves the researchers’ household. Especially as the deceased turns out to be a bitter enemy, suspicions are aroused. Soon, the household finds itself embedded in a mesh of suspicion and fear.
When one of the researchers is also found dead, DI Leslie Gunn finds herself shifting from historical expert, to calling on her training in dealing with violent crime.
2. The Second Strain
The Laird and the Law are brought together again! DI Lesley Gunn must return to Kilstane once more…
Involved in plans to establish the Borders town of Kilstane as a music festival centre, Sir Nicholas Torrance faces problems when a corpse is found in the main concert venue.
Sent to his aid is Detective Inspector Lesley Gunn, who is still emotionally bruised from their last encounter. She becomes enmeshed in musical puzzles, taxing all her powers of deduction.
An eccentric composer dominates the proceedings, but he himself is dominated by the ghost of an old rival. Then there is another murder . . .
4. Wrong Turnings
A TV entrepreneur, a criminal husband, a vicious ex-wife – and one hard-to-catch killer…
When Detective Inspector Lesley Gunn married Sir Nicholas Torrance, she might have expected this to be the end of her career as a sleuth. But returning from their honeymoon, they find themselves involved with the flamboyant Chet Brunner.
The brash film and TV entrepreneur Brunner has surrounded himself with enemies, along with an ex-wife lurking in a nearby cottage with her criminal second husband. Added to that, Brunner’s current wife and latest mistress are battling both over him and with him. And a young widow has some startling things to learn about her dead husband and the bumptious Brunner.
Then a killer strikes, and Lesley cannot help offering her own theories . . .
5. Bareback
‘I could murder that woman!’
So say many inhabitants of the little Scottish Border town of Kilstane. The domineering Hannah Ferguson is determined to take over the annual ceremony based on the legend of a girl who long ago rode bareback across the wilds to save the town from English attackers. The organizing committee is equally determined to stop Hannah.
Into the fray is plunged young Sir Nicholas Torrance, the new laird, with unfamiliar perils to face – not least that of choosing a local girl to play the heroine, inevitably causing outrage in the process.
A theft from his tower house brings an attractive woman detective inspector into his life and she is more deeply involved when there really is a murder and the corpse is left close to his doorstep.
But the great historic pageant must go ahead . . . ending with the wild chase of an unexpected quarry.
