Overview: The story follows James Collins. A twenty-something young man who is convinced that life has dealt him a bad hand. He lives at home with his widowed mother. His two sisters long since gone off on their own.He decides to solve the problem by killing himself.
He picks a date to take his own life and feels much better with it decided.The last thing he sees is a picture of his mum he took with him, he wanted her to be the last thing he saw.He wakes up the day after talking a drugs overdose feeling on top of the world.He goes home to find his mum dead on the settee.
James feels he may have come back to see that his mum got a decent send off. He starts to hear noises upstairs in his room at night. He can’t face going to sleep in his room anymore. There is something behind his closed door now that is taking delight in his pain.
He takes his life again, sure this time that there is no return. This time he has with him a picture of one of his sisters. He doesn’t truly want to be alone when he goes.
He runs a hot bath and slits his wrists.
James Collins wakes up the next morning without a mark on him. He gets a call from his sisters partner that she has died in odd circumstances. The pattern is unfolding. When James Collins kills himself whilst looking at the picture of another, the person in the picture dies in his place. Feeling his mortal soul is in danger he goes to the church and sits in the pews. He is looking for God to recant what has happened. The voice promises him that all he could never have before he can have now. James dares God in his mind to save his soul before he has no choice than to follow the voices wishes. Leaving the church he knows that unless he does as the voice requires his life won’t be worth living , he will just keep getting recycled. We are introduced to Witness, the demon who is now using James to take the souls of others by way of his suicide.
