Overview: You’d been down the King’s Head with John. You’d had too many. It must have been on your mind, on the tip of your tongue with the beer that you drank because you started talking as you walked through the front door. Too quickly, as if you’d been rehearsing as you walked up the street, as if to see me would have changed your mind, so you had to start talking even before the door was fully open.
‘You’re right’, you said to begin with, as if it was all my idea.
I had only ever said it once and even then it was during a fight and so I didn’t think it counted.
‘It’s not working out, is it?’
I didn’t think you’d remembered. It was a long while ago that I’d said that.
I was in the kitchen making a cup of tea. I was squeezing the bag against the side of the mug with a teaspoon. I think my jaw actually fell open, like the old cliché. I put my hand out flat on the grey worktop. You just kept talking as I turned to look at you. The shrivelled teabag perched on the teaspoon between us. I held it out in front of me. I couldn’t think of what to say. I didn’t know what to think. I just stared at you.
‘It’s best if we get this done as quickly as we can’, you said, and then disappeared out of the room to pack your bag.
I was still thinking about Life is Beautiful, the film that I’d bought in the sale that morning. I wanted to watch it that night with you. I was going to suggest we get a curry. It seemed that I had lost the argument without having said a word.
My arm reached up to get you a mug as the kettle had just boiled but then I remembered you wouldn’t be staying.
