4. On Borrowed Time
It’s hotter than it’s ever been in Dark Lake, at least to Lady’s knowledge given her limited experience with the town. She’s still being mentored by Ms. Poole, but in her free time she’s spending more time around new friends. That means free time spent at the library. And that means time around Crispin.Lady has had a crush on Crispin for a while now. Unfortunately for her, so has Otsuya. When Crispin finally makes a move, it inevitably complicates things between Lady and her best friend.To make matters worse, there’s a new hire at the library. Crispin has finally hired on an assistant, Chad. Lady can’t stand him. She wishes he would hire someone else… Which is precisely what may happen when Chad’s body is discovered on the deck of his parent’s boat.Romance will have to be put on hold until Lady and her friends can figure out what happened.
5. Voices in the Woods
People are going missing in the forests of Dark Lake. With the aid of newly awakened witch powers, Lady has a real knack with nature. After she uses her abilities to find one missing person, all eyes are on her to find the second.At least, that’s how it feels to Lady. But her last trick isn’t so easy to repeat. The search has led her to an odd bunker. Odder still, it’s a bunker that no one can seem to find more than once. There’s definitely something otherworldly going on in the woods. Lady needs to find out just who or what is abducting people before someone else goes missing.
6. Family Reunion
The Fisherman’s Inn has its first guests! Lady has been working there for the better part of a year, and these are the first she’s ever seen outside of Doyle and Otsuya, both of whom more or less live there. These three newcomers are the real deal. The inn’s new guests say they’re just there to see the sights, but Dark Lake doesn’t really get tourists. They’re obnoxious, flirty, and ask a whole lot of questions. Lady has her suspicions about them. It seems Lady was right to be suspicious when a couple of faces from her past turn up in town. Something is going on, and she doesn’t have all the facts. She’ll have to get them before everything spirals out of control. The life Lady left behind has come to Dark Lake to find her, and trouble has come along with it.
7. Library Larceny
The Dark Lake library is underappreciated, something Lady and her friends have been working tirelessly to remedy. With events planned and book clubs organized, things are starting to look up. At least they were until Crispin’s parents return home with his little sister.
The arrival of a powerful grimoire has drawn them back, and they’re here to stay. Unfortunately for Crispin, that means they’ll be taking the library back over.
Lady isn’t thrilled about any of this. She has mixed feelings when the priceless grimoire goes missing under their watch. She needs to find it, but she’s not entirely sure she wants to. Especially not if her suspicions are correct and one of her own friends was the one who stole it.
8. Things That Dwell Downstairs
Lady is going to miss the old library Crispin used to run. It was beautiful. It had history. All that is in the past now, though. Management changed hands and now Crispin has a new library to open for the town of Dark Lake.
The location is good. The building could be better, but there are plenty of volunteers to get it ready for opening day. Things are really working out! They’re even thinking about renovating the basement… which is when the problems begin.
There’s something lurking in the basement, and it’s violent. Is it a symptom of something else that’s going on in Dark Lake? All Lady knows for sure is that it’s a problem. And when her best friend Otsuya goes missing, that problem only gets bigger.
9. The Telltale Tea Kettle
Under the tutelage of Ms. Poole, Lady has been learning magic for almost a year now. There’s a rhythm to her life that she’s grown to enjoy: Work at the inn during the day, learn magic from her employer at night.
That rhythm is thrown off when something new is added to the lesson plan. Suddenly, Ms. Poole has two more students to teach.
Adora and Fabia are the daughters of the Dark Lake mayor and their witch mother, Shannon. They’re wealthy and snobbish and completely out of touch with reality.
Lady can’t stand either of them, but when a murder hits close to home she’ll have to cooperate with them to investigate. Babysitting the sisters while trying to solve the case is going to be a challenge. Doing so without turning into a murderer herself might be impossible.
10. Paintings and Parentage
The new Dark Lake library is opening, and Crispin has received something to hang on its walls. They’re paintings. There are two of them, and they are the most arresting pieces of art that Lady has ever seen.
They are also paintings created by Dom’s late mother. It’s without much enthusiasm from him that Lady and her friends set out to find more paintings by Sara Antonie.
Her body of work proves elusive. It’s a hunt that will require learning more about the troubled artist herself as well as the identity of Dom’s absent father.
11. Into the Woods
Lady’s brothers have always been a headache, Horace especially.
When she discovers he’s falling into old, sticky-finger habits again, she’s disappointed but not surprised. However, she does start to worry when the police come knocking on her door. They want to question Horace, but he’s nowhere to be found.
As is custom in Dark Lake, Horace has gotten himself involved in something weird, something complicated and supernatural. He’s in the woods by the marina. Lady will need to find him. She’ll need to figure out why he’s stashing stolen goods out there and why he’s turned the woods into a mysterious, labyrinthine space.
