The Daring Escape of Beatrice and Peabody by Kimberly Newton Fusco
Requirements: ePUB/mobi reader, 693kb
Overview: Set in 1942-43 in America, it is the story of 11 year old Bee. Bee doesn’t have things easy – her parents died when she was only four, leaving her in the care of a young woman named Pauline who worked at the same travelling carnival they did. Bee has a birthmark on her face. As she works at the carnival hot-dog stand her mark catches the eye of teasing children and ignorant adults, and that of mean carnival owner Ellis, who sees profit in Bee’s deformity. When Pauline is forced to accompany Ellis to set up another carnival site in another town, Bee decides she has to leave too.
So she runs away in search of a home, accompanied by two companions who are misfits like her – Peabody, a scruffy dog with a stump of a tail who she finds nosing around the hot dog cart one day, and a pig named Cordelia who is part of the carnival’s pig race show, but is slower and smaller than the other pigs. The story follows Bee as she finds a rather unusual new home and equally unusual new friends, and as she learns you can’t always run away from your problems.
