Overview: At the turn of the nineteenth century, Elizabeth Howard finds herself to be a fresh English rose at the imperial court of Czar Alexander I. There, under the watchful eye of her godmother Princess Nelidova Batonishvili, she is in the market for marriage. Eliza has caught the lustful attention of Count Ivan Vesvolod, an aristocrat with a dubious reputation despite his impeccable breeding.
The Count makes an offer of marriage, but Eliza is determined to resist. She will need the approval of her father for such a match, she insists. But her father has disappeared. He was on a secret mission for the czar and is now believed dead. The decision is out of Eliza’s hands and in those of her godmother.
At the same time there are stirrings of a genuine romance when Eliza is rescued from Vesvolod’s unwanted advances by the dashing Count Leonid Petrovich Orlov. A fight ensues, shots and blood follow – and a lingering desire for revenge.
But Leo, it turns out, is another ‘czar’s man’, and Eliza finds herself irresistibly drawn into the dark and dangerous world of espionage and treachery. Could it possibly help her discover the fate of her beloved father? And how will she handle herself when things turn physical and dangerous?
