Overview: I was born in 1954 in Bangor, Maine, the third of four children, to a low income household. My parents were hard working Maine stock, taking jobs from digging potatoes to working in shoe factories to selling bread and fish. We lived in Winterport, a small river town, through my early childhood, then moved to Pittsfield/Burnham area, to a more rural setting. My father was an avid outdoors man who raised his kids on fresh caught fish and fall venison, and taught us to fish and shoot at a young age. In the summer we lived off a family garden, and raised a cow, pig or chickens for meat. We began to accumulate horses when I was eleven years old.

1. The Standard of Honor
Kaled Del Danaal III, summoned from undeserved exile to claim his father’s throne, discovers he has inherited a realm on the brink of financial and moral collapse. Vasi-Kedar is impoverished beyond his imagination. When he discovers the nobles and governors had taken advantage of his father’s untimely death to enact a tax law that further oppresses the poor, Kaled dares to take action so audacious that the nobles are rocked to their core. From the onset of his administration, he is opposed by the nobles, who fear their privileged lifestyle is in jeopardy. Having walked his city with his young queen, and seeing the extreme poverty of his people, Kaled begins to implement a vision of restoration that is extraordinary in its scope.

After a prolonged effort, Kaled finally secures an opportunity to negotiate a possible trade agreement and treaty with a neighboring wealthy realm that could give Vasi-Kedar’s economy the boost it needs to stagger to its feet. Kaled must travel to Medera for the negotiations, aware that his long absence opens a door for his ambitious half brother to make a bid for the throne, and leaves his wife and son vulnerable. Afraid to take any loyal soldiers with him, he embarks on his perilous mission with a company of civilian men who had been trained in warfare by retired captain Robert Elderson, Kaled’s childhood mentor and godfather. He is not aware when he begins his journey that someone else is watching, ready to make a lethal move against him.

2. Kings and Honor
Kaled and his company, upon entering Medera with a Mederan military escort, leave behind their mysterious watchers, and find themselves facing new challenges.

Having met and befriended Aron, the crown prince of Medera, Kaled approaches the negotiations with Aman with cautious hope. Those hopes are dashed from the onset. Aman’s tactics prove to be brutal and affective, causing Kaled to wonder if his dangerous trek across the Flatbush was in vain. He sets Bret Baraal to the task of searching through the small library in his suite for any information that may assist him in the negotiations, but there appears to be little hope there.

Hawke Baraal, true to his volatile nature, has no difficulty finding trouble in Medera. Having befriended Rush Soren, a Mederan lieutenant, he finally finds direction for his future. He sets his sights on becoming a member of Kaled’s Royal Guard, but is all too aware that his own contentious nature is his greatest stumbling block in achieving such a lofty and disciplined position. He determines he will have to overcome his faults and prove himself to Kaled and Captain Elderson.

As Aman makes negotiants nearly impossible, Aron reveals to Kaled a secret his father would prefer remain hidden, raising Aman’s ire. Kaled, finally understanding his only hope for success, sends Bret and Corporal Leeds on a vital return mission to Vasi-Kedar, unaware of the peril into which they will be riding.
