Overview: This book began forming in my head after the first school shooting occurred at Thurston High School in Springfield Oregon. In my quest to understand the incomprehensible, I sought work in detention centers, in addition to working with the “worst of the worst” in public schools.
For thirty years I watched, spoke with, and listened to, some of the most challenged and challenging young people among us. In doing so, I learned to put aside my assumptions and to open my mind to possibilities. I learned that people are often not who they appear to be. And I learned that even the most damaged and misbehaving can change, with the right encouragement and opportunities. Thus was born this book, Crooked Grow the Trees.
