Crime Wave: A Canada West Anthology (2020) by J. E. Barnard (ed. Sun77)

Overview: Crime has always been a woman’s genre. Our most famous Golden Age authors were women: Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and, in America, Mary Roberts Rinehart. They rocked the fair-play mystery, and were masters at building suspense. The authors in this anthology skillfully continue this tradition.
Why women and crime? Yes, we love a puzzle, and the challenge of pitting ourselves against the fictional sleuth. But it’s more than that.
Real life doesn’t always give us satisfactory endings. The good guys and gals don’t always win. This brings me to justice, which I believe is at the heart of the genre.
In crime fiction, the murderer will be revealed at the end. Chaos will return to order. The western women featured in this anthology have brought that home. In typical western fashion, justice will be done, be it within the law or not.
The stories in this anthology cover the Canadian West, from past to present, from the Prairies to Vancouver Island, and north to the Yukon. They run the gamut from classic twisty mysteries to taut suspense, from stories with gravitas to those with humour.
A wild ride, as one would only expect of women from the west.
