Overview: Among Victor Canning’s numerous surviving short stories there are many tales of crime and detection. A few found their way into anthologies, but most of them have never been reprinted since their first appearance. There have already been made separate collections of those of Canning’s stories which were set in Italy and the Balkans, and of those which featured the series characters from the Minerva Club, Papa Grand of the Department of Patterns, and Dr. Kang. In this collection of Canning’s remaining crime stories there are twenty separated stories that are mainly concerned with the crime or the criminal into Part 1, and another sixteen detective stories in which we are mainly concerned with how the criminal is exposed have been put into Part II. Many of these stories are very short, 1,800 words or less, occupying under a page of an evening newspaper or ten minutes of the reader’s time. Others, those which appeared in the short-story magazines, are between 2,500 and 4,000 words, and it is included even one longer story, “The Crown Jewels Robbery”, which first appeared in serial form and at 9,500 words is almost a novella.
