Overview: The author of this well-researched, invigorating and refreshingly clear monograph (in the consistently excellent ‘St Andrews Studies in Reformation History’ series) tells us that he set out to throw light on the efforts of Bishop John Hooper to advance Protestant reform in the diocese of Gloucester. But, when immersing himself in the archives, he was struck by the prominence of the roles played by magistrates and local gentry, and soon changed his focus to a prosopographical study of the connections and changing fortunes of the urban and landed élites along the lower Severn valley, and an analysis of the changing nature of their relations with each other, and of their affiliations with local religious institutions.
