Her novels about Clara Fitzgerald are inspired by her love of early Twentieth Century history and her fascination with crime stories. Started as a summertime project, the Clara Fitzgerald series now contains close to 30 books, each featuring the feisty, no-nonsense detective and her friends and family.

In 2021, The Gentleman Detective series launched as a separate set of mysteries featuring Colonel Bainbridge and his niece, Victoria Bovington. Set in the late Victorian period Bainbridge and Victoria face different challenges to Clara as they go about solving cases.

The Dog Theft Mystery (#28)
Brighton 1924

Easter is just around the corner and Clara is set to help O’Harris with his Easter fete until she witnesses a dognapping down on the beach. Suddenly finding herself with two distraught children who have lost their dog to a thief, she sets out to make things right.

She swiftly discovers that several other people in town have had dogs stolen and as she learns more she realises there is an organised dog snatching gang going around. But what do they want the dogs for?

Meanwhile, Mrs Trelawney is hosting an art event for a sculptor called Toltz and is determined that Clara shall attend. The Toltz exhibition features a lot of valuable items and Mrs Trelawney is nervous about security. Despite finding Toltz particularly disagreeable, Clara agrees to help.

Just when Clara seems to be making sense of it all, her brother Tommy is kidnapped. Worried the dognappers mean to hurt him, she sets out on a desperate search to find him before it is too late.

Torn between two cases, Clara has to choose who to help and who to turn away – maybe it is time Clara put herself and her family first?

The Day the Zeppelin Came (#29)
A peaceful summer morning in Brighton is shattered when a Zeppelin airship crashes on a school playing field.

The town’s residents are fearful this indicates the start of another war with Germany, but Clara Fitzgerald suspects the incident is far more local in its origins. Racing to the crash site, she discovers the only person aboard is dead, shot in mysterious circumstances.

Meanwhile, Gilbert McMillan, sleazy newspaper reporter, is hot on the case as well. He thinks he knows the answer to the mystery already and does not want anyone else getting the story first. He bolts out of town to find the truth, only to end up part of the mystery himself when he too disappears.

Before long the army are involved, a police constable finds himself in danger and Clara is trying to unravel an old war story of high treason.

But just who was the man on the airship and how is his death linked to a corrupt nobleman and wartime betrayal?

The Mystery of Mallory (#30)
Some mysteries are not meant to be solved…

A seemingly innocent crossword puzzle book has some of Clara’s closest friends arguing. Accusations of cheating start to become dangerous when one person is violently threatened and Clara is torn between revealing a fraudster and helping a man scared for his life.

When James Clapton arrives at her door claiming a man who should be dead is walking around Brighton things become even more complicated. Could a local workman really be lost explorer Andrew Irvine and how does it all link to the recent failed expedition to Mount Everest?

Clara finds herself in a moral dilemma – might revealing the truth do more harm than good?
