Overview: Rick Gauger is working name of US author Richard C Gauger (1942- ), who began publishing sf with "The Vacuum-Packed Picnic" for Omni in September 1979. His sf novel, Charon’s Ark (1987), intriguingly depicts the hijacking of a 747 full of students, which is taken to Charon, the hollowed-out moon of Pluto, a Macrostructure constructed by Aliens to preserve Earth’s Dinosaurs. Charon turns out to be a World Ship with a dangerously defective Computer, whose function is to carry life across the Galaxy: it needs new crew members.

1. Charon’s Ark: A planeload of high-school students, their teacher, and the airliner’s crew are hijacked in midair by an alien spacecraft. The aliens take them to their crazily-malfunctioning starship Ark, which we know as the planet Pluto and its moon Charon.
Sixty-five million years ago, the Ark came to Earth to collect plants and animals. It was ship-wrecked and stranded in our solar system. Now its alien crew intends to force the teenagers to learn to operate the Ark, so it can continue on its multi-billion year mission of sowing life among the stars.
The humans are flabbergasted of course, but life-change is not unwelcome to two of them. One is copilot Froward, whose drinking, womanizing, and general fecklessness are about to cost him his career.
2. Charon’s Children: Charlie Freeman, Chela Suarez, Froward and the other adults and teenagers are now marooned on the drifting crewless interstellar Ark, which we know as Pluto’s moon Charon. If they can master its decrepit machinery during their lifetimes, they can go home — maybe. As they reluctantly begin their new lives, a faster solution — and a savage new threat — springs out of Charon’s dinosaur-infested wilderness. Meet the Bigbirds, intelligent dinosaurs who have their own plans for defending their homeworld from human invasion!
3. Charon Is Coming: Dinosaurs, aliens, robots and high school students create chaos across Seattle as our characters flee to Earth from Charon!
Charlie, Chela, No Gonads, and the Mesozoic Club of Garfield High School must outwit the U.S. Government in time to save humanity!
