Consumers in the Bush: Shopping in Rural Upper Canada by Douglas McCalla
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 6.6 MB
Overview: General stores are essential to the image of a colonial village. Many historians, however, still base their stories of settlement on the notion of rural self-sufficiency, begging the question: if general stores were so common, who were their customers?

To answer this, Consumers in the Bush draws on the account books of country stores, rich evidence that has rarely been used. Douglas McCalla considers more than 30,000 transactions on the accounts of 750 families at seven Upper Canadian stores between 1808 and 1861.

These customers were typical of rural society – farmers, artisans, labourers, and often women. At village stores they found a wide variety of products, most imported from Britain, a few from the United States, and a surprising number that were produced locally.

Download The Hurrians by Gernot Wilhelm (.PDF)

The Hurrians (Ancient Near East Series) by Gernot Wilhelm
Requirements: PDF Reader, 7.0 MB
Overview: The Hurrians were one of the principal contributors to ancient Near Eastern civilisation and yet we know far less about their language, history and culture than we do about the Sumerians, Assyrians or Hittites. In this book, Professor Wilhelm has gathered the scattered threads from a great range of sources between 2500 and 500 BC, to give the first ever survey of the Hurrians. Professor Wilhelm is one of the world’s principal authorities on Hurrian language and history, and the book is therefore highly authoritative, although written for the general reader. The text has been specially brought up to date by the author for this edition, and an extra chapter on the archaeology, with additional illustrations, has been contributed by Dr Diana Stein. The Hurrians is essential to everyone studying the ancient Near East, and provide a starting point for future research into this important civilisation.

Requirements: PDF Reader, 88.5 MB
Overview: A classic work depicting the early months of the Russian Revolution, featuring a new introduction for the revolution’s centenary. During the months following the collapse of the tsarist regime in war-torn Russia, the Bolshevik Party emerged from obscurity to overthrow the Provisional Government and establish the world’s first communist government. In this absorbing narrative, Alexander Rabinowitch refutes the Soviet myth that the party’s triumph in the October Revolution was inevitable. Exploring the changing situation and aspirations of workers, soldiers, and Baltic fleet sailors in Petrograd, Rabinowitch’s classic account reveals the critical link between the party’s revolutionary tactics and the Petrograd masses.

Download Sorrow of the Earth by Eric (Éric) Vuillard (.ePUB)

Sorrow of the Earth: Buffalo Bill, Sitting Bull and the Tragedy of Show Business by Éric Vuillard
Requirements: Epub reader, 1.05 Mb
Overview: Fascinating, brilliant and angry: the tale of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and the tragic fate of its Native American participants.
Buffalo Bill was the prince of show business. His spectacular Wild West shows were performed to packed houses across the world, holding audiences spellbound with their grand re-enactments of tales from the American frontier. For Bill gave the crowds something they’d never seen before: real-life Indians.
This astonishing work of historical re-imagining tells the story of the Native Americans swallowed up by Buffalo Bill’s great entertainment machine. Of chief Sitting Bull, paraded in theatres to boos and catcalls for fifty dollars a week. Of a baby Lakota girl, found under her mother’s frozen body, adopted and displayed on the stage. Of the last few survivors of Wounded Knee, hired to act out the horrific massacre of their tribe as entertainment. And of Buffalo Bill Cody himself, hamming it to the last, even as it consumed him.
Told with beauty, compassion and anger, Sorrow of the Earth shows us tragedy turned into a circus act, history into sham, truth into a spectacle more powerful than reality itself. Could any of us turn away?
