Blood, Bones and Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef by Gabrielle Hamilton
Requirements: MOBI reader 964.73
Overview: Gabrielle Hamilton’s memoir, Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef, is just what a chef’s story should be–delectable, dripping with flavor, tinged with adrenaline and years of too-little sleep. What sets Hamilton apart, though, is her ability to write with as much grace as vitriol, a distinct tenderness marbling her meaty story. Hamilton spent her idyllic childhood on a wild farm in rural Pennsylvania with an exhilarant father–an artist and set builder–and French mother, both "incredibly special and outrageously handsome." As she entered her teens, however, her family unexpectedly dissolved. She moved to New York City at 16, living off loose change and eating ketchup packets from McDonald’s; worked 20-hour days at a soulless catering company; traveled, often half-starved, through Europe; and cooked cooked for allergy-riddled children at a summer camp. The constant thread running through this patchwork tale, which culminates with the opening of her New York City restaurant, Prune, is Hamilton’s slow simmering passion for cooking and the comfort it can bring. "To be picked up and fed, often by strangers, when you are in that state of fear and hunger, became the single most important food experience I came back to over and over," Hamilton writes, and it’s this poignant understanding of the link between food and kindness that makes Blood, Bones & Butter so satisfying to read.

Hard Luck Harvey Haddix and the Greatest Game Ever Lost by Lew Freedman
Requirements: PDF 1.39 MB
Overview: He pitched a baseball game that was more than perfect, and yet he lost. Southpaw Harvey Haddix had logged an unspectacular career by the time he took the mound on May 26, 1959. Haddix faced the Milwaukee Braves and set down the first 36 batters in a row, or 12 innings’ wortha perfect game three innings longer than the norm. But his Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t score, either, and Haddix lost in the 13th inning on a controversial play. This book recounts Haddix’s one-of-a-kind performance and describes the official decisions that changed the historical record.

Understanding Close-up Photography: Creative Close Encounters with or without a Macro Lens By Bryan Peterson
Requirements: PDF Reader, 37 MB.
Overview: In Understanding Close-up Photography Bryan Peterson turns his attention to a topic that is an ongoing favorite with photographers. But where most macro photography books focus on capuring subjects in nature, Peterson promises to go beyond, teaching you to photograph a range of subjects from animals and plants from the garden, beach, or mountains to objects found in the kitchen, supermarket, even the junkyard.
In addition to information on equipment, exposure, light, and composition, his book will feature elements of technique that go beyond the norm, teaching you to shoot not just what is generally considered close-up, but to go even closer to the point of abstraction. He will also show you how to produce the intimacy of a close-up within a larger shot–how to capture the look in your subject’s eyes without compromising the clarity of the surrounding scene. And as always, Peterson offers his signature touch with his personal terminology: in what he likes to call "Pop Junk" he shows how combining creativity with the right digital technology can turn close-up photos of the most ordinary objects into surprising pieces of art.

Download Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua (.epub)

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua
Requirements: epub reader, 820kb
Overview: Chua’s stated intent is to present the differences between Western and Chinese parenting styles by sharing experiences with her own children (now teenagers). As the daughter of Chinese immigrants, she is poised to contrast the two disparate styles, even as she points out that being a “Chinese Mother” can cross ethnic lines: it is more a state of mind than a genetic trait. Yet this is a deeply personal story about her two daughters and how their lives are shaped by such demands as Chua’s relentless insistence on straight A’s and daily hours of mandatory music practice, even while vacationing with grandparents. Readers may be stunned by Chua’s explanations of her hard-line style, and her meant-to-be humorous depictions of screaming matches intended to force greatness from her girls. She insists that Western children are no happier than Chinese ones, and that her daughters are the envy of neighbors and friends, because of their poise and musical, athletic, and academic accomplishments. Ironically, this may be read as a cautionary tale that asks just what price should be paid for achievement. –Colleen Mondor
