Overview: An extremely entertaining piece of rare weird fiction Dark Sanctuary was was the only book that H B Gregory wrote. It was almost completely lost to obscurity, but survived due to Karl Edward Wagner’s infamous early 1980 s “Best Horror” list.
The novel opens with Anthony Lovell Sr, master of the ancient abbey of Kestrel and its like-named island off the Cornish coast, raving in madness and fear over the ancient family curse that “dwells in the bowels of the Abbey rock”. What has caused his madness is unclear, but it is obviously linked to something seen or experienced in Kestrel’s ancient crypts.
Seeking first to aid his ailing father before his death, and later to rid the family of the curse, Tony enlists the aid of a “psychotherapist,” Dr Gaunt, who ventures to Kestrel and begins wielding his influence over the island’s inhabitants. Concerned about his friend’s state of being, Tony’s London-based friend John Hamilton joins the party, and Valerie Bennett, a rector’s daughter from the coastal town of Pentock, also becomes intertwined in the plot.
Fans of H P Lovecraft, Weird Tales, and William Hope Hodgson’s House on the Borderlands will appreciate the novel. Gregory writes with what seems to be an authentic understanding of the occult, albeit with clearly Christian overtones.
As noted above,Dark Sanctuary is included in the legendary “KEW 39”. Originally published in 1983 in “Twilight Zone” magazine, this list named the 39 horror novels which the late Karl Edward Wagner considered to be the best published; although they may also be seen as his personal favourites, including many that he considered deserving of greater attention. It has been said that Wagner’s list comprised about one-third readily available titles, one-third mildly-hard-to-obtain titles, and one-third fabulous rarities. Dark Sanctuary falls in the latter category – or at least it has until now.
