After The Last Race by Dean Koontz

Overview: Well, if you”re going to write genre novels, you might as well cover every genre. This is Koontz” first, and really only, attempt at a straight hardboiled-style thriller. A loose-knit gang of would-be thieves have a plan to hold up a racetrack on a day when there will be at least two million dollars on the premises. Simple, easy to understand, with some nice plot twists and excellent characterization. Koontz takes a jaundiced look at the excesses of the seventies and the excesses of thriller writers like Spillane all in one gulp. This is one of the longest novels Koontz wrote before becoming a superstar, and one gets the feeling he was testing his expansiveness legs, as it were. Unfortunately, it doesn”t work quite as well here as it does in much longer books (e.g. Whispers or The House of Thunder); the first fifty pages, especially, are slow as molasses. Once it picks up, though, it picks up fast. This may well be the hardest Dean Koontz novel on the planet to find. It”s worth searching out, but the prices will probably scare you more than most of his later novels.

Surrounded by Dean Koontz

Overview: In Surrounded Felton puts Tucker in touch with Frank Meyers. Meyers is looking to assemble a crew to rob a bank located in an exclusive shopping mall near Santa Monica, California. Along with safecracker Edgar Bates they plan to knock off the bank and a jewelry store while the mall is closed. After subduing the guards Tucker learns that Meyers wanted more than money from this heist. His actions bring the police, and now Tucker must figure out how to get them (and the money) out of the surrounded mall.

This is the second of three novels under the Coffey pseudonym and the second of three featuring the same lead character, Michael Tucker.

Overview: Bejamin Chase is a retired war hero living in an attic with a drinking habit. One night he rescues a young woman from an obsessed killer. Soon the killer has changed his target and phoning Chase and warning that he is out for revenge on the man who interferred attempted murder. The killer, simply named "The Judge" is threatening to kill Chase but the police dont believe him as he has a history of drnik related incidents. Chase is forced to take matters into his own hands and attempts to unmask The Judge himself and end the threat of a vengeful lunatic.

The Key to Midnight by Dean Koontz

Overview: The Key to Midnight may be a different type of a Koontz novel, but it is just as exciting and suspenseful as his later work. It is very well written with skillful character drawing, internal and external conflicts, and car chases galore. The pacing is impeccable, for it makes the reader devour each word with the thrill increasing as the plot progresses.
