Harry Barnett Series by Robert Goddard
Requirements: .ePUB Reader 1.23MB
Overview: Robert Goddard was born in Hampshire. He was educated at Price’s Grammar School, Fareham (1966-1973). At Price’s he gained entry to Peterhouse College, Cambridge where he read History. He worked as an educational administrator in Devon before becoming a full-time novelist.

His thrillers usually have a historical element and settings in provincial English towns and cities, and many plot twists. They usually involve the lead character gradually uncovering a conspiracy which has long been kept secret, by means of historical documents such as diaries or by means of word-of-mouth accounts that have been handed down from one person to another. Regarded as one of Britain’s finest historical/crime thriller authors, Goddard’s first novel, Past Caring, was published in 1986. He has since written another twenty novels, the majority of which have been Sunday Times Top Ten best-sellers in the UK.

Into The Blue: Goddard’s newest novel shows that even a middle-aged, frumpy man can become a hero. When Heather Mallender, English schoolteacher, disappears while sightseeing in Greece with Harry Barnett, Barnett must discover whether she disappeared voluntarily or was a victim of malice. In Hitchcockian tradition, the hero finds himself trapped in a web of intrigue that threatens not only his reputation, but also his life. Barnett’s quest leads him from Greece to England and back, followed everywhere he goes, encountering suspicion and resistance at every turn. Everyone, it seems, has things to hide. Goddard’s elegant and gothic portrait of blackmail, deception, and death is hampered by its meandering pace and intricacy. Still, the novel is ultimately successful.

Out Of The Sun: When Harry Barnett is anonymously informed that his son is languishing in hospital in a diabetic coma, he is certain there must be some mistake, since he does not have a son. But he soon discovers that he does. David Venning is a brilliant mathematician, whose illness is taken to be either a tragic accident or a suicide attempt. But, oddly enough, his notebooks are missing from the hotel room in which he was found. And Harry discovers that two other scientists employed, like David, by Globescope Inc., an American forecasting institute, have died in mysterious circumstances. Perhaps David is actually the victim of attempted murder. And perhaps the deaths of other Globescope staff are not the coincidences they seem. Pursuing the truth in England, Denmark and the United States, Harry finds himself entangled in several different kinds of conspiracy, none of which he should – in theory – be able to defeat. But as before in his life, Harry finds that circumstance and theory are not necessarily the same thing.

Never Go Back: In the spellbinding new mystery by the master of “the clever twist,” a group of ex-RAF comrades journey to a Scottish castle for a reunion. But by the time they reach their destination, two of them are dead.Harry Barnett is leading a contented life in Vancouver with his wife and daughter when he is brought back to England by the death of his mother. He intends to spend just a few days sorting out her affairs when a chance meeting he will regret for the rest of his life makes him change his plans. Two old acquaintances from his National Service days track Harry down to his mother’s house — the last address they had for him. A lavish reunion has been organized to mark the fiftieth anniversary of their RAF days. Harry decides to go.During the war, Harry and his fellow RAF conscripts spent three months in a Scottish castle where they acted as guinea pigs in a psychological experiment. The reunion is to take place in the same castle. It will be a chance to see friends, settle old scores and lay a few ghosts to rest. The party begins on the train up to Aberdeen, until the apparent suicide of one of their number shatters the holiday atmosphere. Their arrival in Scotland seems under a cloud, and when another comrade dies soon after their arrival, Harry is gripped by a sense of foreboding. As well, the recollections of the old comrades of their time in the castle are frighteningly different, and unexplained events from 1955 still haunt them. As Harry tries to solve the mystery of what really happened fifty years ago, he uncovers an extraordinary secret that convinces him he will never leave the castle alive.

Red Hot Lies:
They say bad things happen in threes. When her fiancé, Sam, disappears on the same day her mentor and biggest client is killed, hotshot Chicago attorney Izzy McNeil starts counting. But trouble keeps coming. Sam is implicated in the client’s death, her apartment is broken into and it’s not just the authorities who are following her.
Now, to find Sam and uncover her client’s murderer, Izzy will have to push past limits she never imagined. Lucky for her she’s always thrived under pressure, because her world is falling apart. Fast. And the trail of half truths and lies is red-hot.

Red Blooded Murder:
Chicago is the Windy City, and these days the winds of change are whipping Izzy McNeil’s life all over the map. A high-profile job on Trial TV lands her in the hot seat. After a shocking end to her engagement, she finds herself juggling not only her ex-fiancé, but a guy she never expected. And a moonlighting undercover gig has her digging deep into worlds she barely knew existed.
But all of this takes a backseat when Izzy’s friend winds up brutally murdered. Suddenly, Izzy must balance the demands of a voracious media and the knowledge that she didn’t know her friend as well as she thought.

Red, White & Dead:
Izzy McNeil is hot on the trail of one of Chicago’s most notorious gangsters. Not that he realizes the crimson-tressed enchantress, a self-proclaimed "lapsed lawyer," is moonlighting as a private investigator. But when an unexpected run-in trashes Izzy’s cover, she’s swept into an evil underworld where she is definitely not safe.
That is until Izzy receives help from an unlikely source: the ultimate guardian angel. And the last person she ever dreamed she’d see again. Now Izzy is racing from Chicago to Rome, all the while battling personal demons, Mafiosi killers and red hot emergency desires….

Claim of Innocence:
Forbidden relationships are the most tempting. And the most dangerous.
It was a crime of passion–or so the police say. Valerie Solara has been charged with poisoning her best friend. The prosecution claims she’s always been secretly attracted to Amanda’s husband…and with Amanda gone, she planned to make her move.
Attorney Izzy McNeil left the legal world a year ago, but a friend’s request pulls her into the murder trial. Izzy knows how passion can turn your life upside down. She thought she had it once with her ex–fiance, Sam. Now she wonders if that’s all she has in common with her criminally gorgeous, younger boyfriend, Theo.
It’s Izzy’s job to present the facts that will exonerate her client–whether or not she’s innocent. But when she suspects Valerie is hiding something, she begins investigating–and uncovers a web of secret passions and dark motives, where seemingly innocent relationships can prove poisonous…

7. Cutwork (2004)
Truth seems hopelessly entangled with deception in this fascinating new needlework mystery by Monica Ferris. When a talented sculptor is murdered at a craft fair, Betsy Devonshire, owner of the Crewel Word needlework shop, is busy working at the fair’s information booth, practically on the scene yet completely out of the loop. But Betsy’s reputation for choosing all the right threads to pull in an investigation soon puts her in the center of the crime’s unexpectedly complex pattern. One valued customer asks for Betsy’s help in proving that the troubled youth accused of the crime is innocent, despite all the evidence to the contrary, while another insists on entrusting her with scraps of information the authorities seem too eager to dismiss. Discovering the truth means piecing together clues gathered from the dead man’s family and friends and interweaving them with confidences from a friend on the police force who’s troubled by the possibility that this crime is not as simple as the detective in charge of the case wants to believe. Soon, Wendy starts stitching together a strong case for justice, despite the danger of tampering with the unknown murderer’s diabolically deadly design. Sue Stone

8. Crewel Yule (2004)

9. Embroidered Truths (2005)
Full-time needlework shop owner and part-time sleuth Betsy Devonshire has already sewn up her share of crafty conundrums. Now, she takes on her most difficult, dangerous, and deeply personal case yet.
After her good friend Godwin has an unexpectedly nasty quarrel with his significant other, John, Betsy finds herself with a roommate. Then they discover John dead, and Godwin is arrested for the murder. Now, Betsy has to untangle a complex knot of lies if she’s going to save Godwin-before the murderer decides to cut off his loose ends for good.

10. Sins and Needles (2006)
When adoptee Lucille Jones comes to town researching her roots, Betsy notices that she bears a remarkable resemblance to local Jan Henderson. Betsy introduces the look-alikes, and they quickly hit it off. But then Jan’s wealthy great-aunt is found dead in her bed, and Jan is the prime suspect. Lucille begs Betsy to help clear her new friend’s name.
And while going through her aunt’s effects, Jan finds an old embroidered pillow featuring a flag with 49 stars-an odd error for a woman so sharp at figures. Stranger still, the lining is stitched with a map of Lake Minnetonka. Betsy intends to follow the threads. Who knows-it could just possibly lead to buried treasure. Or, perhaps, to a secret that someone would kill to conceal.

11. Knitting Bones (2007)
The stitchers of the Embroiderers Guild are thrilled to have raised over $20,000 for charity-but they’re less pleased when the representative who accepts the check disappears with it. After breaking her leg in a fall from a horse, Betsy’s confined to her apartment and loopy on pain killers-she can’t possibly investigate. But Godwin, her store manager, insists that he can do the legwork. Little do they know that a man across town has a similar injury-and he too is wondering what happened to that check. Betsy and Godwin have got to figure it out first, or it’ll be a bad break for everyone.

12. Thai Die (2008)
As full-time owner of the Crewel World needlework shop and part-time sleuth, Betsy Devonshire has become skilled at weaving suspicious threads. But when one of her regulars unwittingly becomes involved in a deadly delivery of exotic antiquities, Betsy fears something is seriously warped.

13. Blackwork (2009)
It’s Halloween – and Betsy Devonshire, owner of the Crewel World needlework shop and part-time sleuth, is haunted by murder.
In the town of Excelsior, Minnesota, Leona Cunningham, owner of a popular microbrewery, is a practitioner of Wicca, the nature-based religion often mistaken for black magic. But that doesn’t bother the thirsty crowds. Then, after one too many pints, a local blames Leona for the series of ‘accidents’ that have happened throughout town. When he ends up dead without a mark on his body, Leona’s the main suspect. But Betsy’s on the case, and that spells trouble for the killer.

14. Buttons and Bones (2010)
Owner of the Crewel World needlework shop and part-time sleuth Betsy Devonshire heads for the Minnesota north woods to renovate an old cabin. But beneath the awful linoleum is something even uglier- the skeleton of a Nazi. Betsy’s investigation yields the site of a former German POW camp, a mysterious crocheted rug, and an intricately designed pattern of clues to a decades-old crime.

15. Threadbare (2012)
When an elderly homeless woman is found dead on the shore of Lake Minnetonka, she’s wearing something that holds the key to her identity but also opens up a mystery.
