Then and Now by W. Somerset Maugham
Requirements: ePUB, PDF or MOBI Reader, 1.47MB
Overview: Then and Now is a historical novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Set mainly in Imola, Italy, but also in other Italian cities, including Machiavelli’s hometown Florence during the Renaissance, the story focuses on three months in the life of Niccolo Machiavelli, the Florentine politician, diplomat, philosopher and writer in the early years of the 16th century. The book was first published by Heinemann in 1946. It recollects Machiavelli’s encounter with Cesare Borgia, who was the model on which Machiavelli based his Il Principe. Against that background, a love farce unfolds, in which Machiavelli tries to seduce the young wife of his host at Imola. The unsuccessful affair gave Machiavelli the idea of writing his first comedy – The Mandrake. Thus, Then and Now appears to combine the two best known works of Machiavelli – The Prince and The Mandrake.

The Present Moment by Marjorie Oludhe Macgoye
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 2.MB
Overview: This contemporary African classic tells the story of seven unforgettable Kenyan women as it traces more than sixty years of turbulent national history. Like their country, this group of old women is divided by ethnicity, language, class, and religion. But around the charcoal fire at the Refuge, the old-age home they share in Nairobi, they uncover the hidden personal histories that connect them as women: stories of their struggles for self-determination; of conflict, violence, and loss, but also of survival.

Each woman has found her way to the Refuge because of a devastating life experience—the loss of family and security to revolution, emigration, or poverty. But as they reflect upon their tragedies, they also become aware of the community they have formed—a community of collective history, strength, humor, and affection. And they learn that they are more connected than they know, as the murder of a student in the neighborhood reveals how their lives have intersected across generations, how securely the past is tied to the present and to the future of their young nation.

Johnny Mad Dog: A Novel by Emmanuel Dongala
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 1.02 Mb
Overview: Life During Wartime, As Seen Through the Eyes of Two Congolese Teenagers
Set amid the chaos of West Africa’s civil wars, Emmanuel Dongala’s striking new novel tells the story of two teenagers growing up while rival ethnic groups fight for control of their country.
At age sixteen, Johnny is a member of the Death Dealers, a rebel faction bent on seizing power. Even as he is drawn into the rebels’ program of terror, Johnny Mad Dog, as he calls himself, retains his youthful exuberance-searching for girls, good times, and adventure. Sixteen-year-old Laokolé, for her part, dreams of finishing high school and becoming an engineer, but as rogue militias prepare to sack the city, she is forced to leave home with her mother and brother-and then finds herself alone and running from the likes of Johnny.
Acclaimed in France, Johnny Mad Dog is a coming-of-age story like no other; Dongala’s masterful use of dual narrators makes the novel an unusually vivid and affecting tale of the struggle to survive-and to retain one’s humanity-in terrifying times.
