Overview: ‘He loved power for power’s sake . . . He was without question the greatest of the Rougons.’

His Excellency Eugène Rougon (1876) is the sixth novel in Zola’s twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle. A political novel set in the corridors of power and in the upper échelons of French Second Empire society, including the Imperial court, it focuses on the fluctuating fortunes of the authoritarian Eugène Rougon, the ‘vice-Emperor’. But it is more than just a chronicle. It plunges the reader into the essential dynamics of the political: the rivalries, the scheming, the jockeying for position, the ups and downs, the play of interests, the lobbying and gossip, the patronage and string-pulling, the bribery and blackmail, and, especially, the manipulation of language for political purposes. The novel’s themes-especially its treatment of political discourse-have remarkable contemporary resonance.

Therapy Mammals by Jon Methven
Requirements: ePUB / MOBI Reader, 1.5MB | Retail
Overview: Tom Pistilini has just discovered he’s an unwitting investor in a macabre tourism company bringing wealthy European sightseers obsessed with America’s murder culture to explore mass shooting sites. It’s a business that will make him wealthy, although he might just despise it enough to ruin his neighbors, and himself, financially.

Told from the first-person perspective of unreliable narrator Tom "Pisser" Pistilini, the Patrick Bateman of the private school community, Therapy Mammals is the story of the lengths one father will go to protect his children, his marriage, and his worthiness.

Pisser’s life is a mess. He recently emerged from a pharmaceutical blackout to find himself strangling the captain of the high school lacrosse team against the bathroom wall of Gopa Academy, a premier Manhattan private school. His wife is having an affair with a motivational speaker. His job as Channel Fourteen’s meteorologist is in jeopardy. His nanny died in a freak accident, of which he may have been involved. It is also possible he murdered the lacrosse coach with a four-iron. A group of millennial hackers has discovered the tourism business. He has a chipmunk infestation in his backyard. His wife’s vertical pancake business, Standcake, is on the verge of ruin. His son is a cross-dressing geriatric. Controversial photographs of his daughter are circulating. Various factions of parents are aligned against him, but who can blame them: he stole a prosthetic leg and an equipment bus, causing the lacrosse team to forfeit an important game. He kidnapped a feral cat, hoping it would clear his yard of chipmunks while also behaving as his therapy pet. He named it Clint Eastwood. His cat is pregnant.

Therapy Mammals is an intriguing romp through modern parenthood navigating class privilege, digital media, hacker culture and gun violence.

Requirements: ePUB Reader, 3.0MB | Retail
Overview: Welcome to Overland! Where the California sun shines down on synthetic grass and plastic oranges bedeck the trees all year round. Steam billows gently from the chimney tops and the blue tarpaulin lake is open for fishing…

Hollywood set-designer George Godfrey has been called on to do his patriotic duty and he doesn’t believe in half-measures. If he is going to hide an American aircraft plant from the threat of Japanese aerial spies he has an almighty job on his hands. He will need an army of props and actors to make the Lockheed factory vanish behind the semblance of a suburban town. Every day, his "Residents" climb through a trapdoor in the factory roof to shift model cars, shop for imaginary groceries and rotate fake sheep in felt-green meadows.

Overland is a beacon for the young women labouring below it: Queenie, dreaming of movie stardom while welding sheet metal; Kay, who must seek refuge from the order to intern "All Persons of Japanese Ancestry". Meanwhile, George’s right-hand Resident, Jimmy, knows that High Command aren’t at all happy with the camouflage project…

With George so bewitched by his own illusion, might it risk confusing everybody – not just the enemy?

Based on true events, it is a novel where characters’ dreams and desires come down to earth with more than a bump, confronting the hardships of life during wartime. As surreal and playful as it is affecting and unsettling, no-one other than Graham Rawle could have created it.

Every Night the Trees Disappear: Werner Herzog and the Making of Heart of Glass by Alan Greenberg
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 1.2MB
Overview: "You know from seeing it that Herzog was up to something strange in filming Heart of Glass. Now the mystery is clarified. Alan Greenberg peers into the heart of darkness of the great artist." —Roger Ebert “Mesmerizing . . . as poetic and mysterious as the film itself.”—Jim Jarmusch This intimate chronicle of the visionary filmmaker Werner Herzog directing a masterwork is interwoven with Herzog’s original screenplay to create a unique vision of its own. Alan Greenberg was, according to the director, the first “outsider” to seek him out and recognize his greatness. At the end of their first evening together Herzog urged Greenberg to work with him on his new film—and everything thereafter. In this film, Heart of Glass, Herzog exercised control over his actors by hypnotizing them before shooting their scenes. The result was one of the most haunting movies ever made. Not since Lillian Ross’s classic 1950 book Picture has an American writer given such a close, first-hand, book-length account of how a director makes a movie. But this is not a conventional, journalistic account. Instead it presents a unique vision with the feel of a novel—intimate, penetrating, and filled with mystery. Alan Greenberg is a writer, film director, film producer, and photographer. He is also the author of Love in Vain: A Vision of Robert Johnson. Werner Herzog is considered one of the world’s greatest filmmakers. His books include Conquest of the Useless and Of Walking in Ice.
