Castlehood by Neil Mach

Overview: Edward of Windsor is on the throne of England. The Marches, a disputed border area between the territory of Wales and the Kingdom of England, are overseen and guarded by a motley array of feudal lords, barons, and semi-autonomous chiefs, each more brazen than the last, in a grand patchwork of overlapping hierarchies. A feudal lord, installed within a castle, governs each domain. Each castle domain attempts to exert power and influence over others through military, commercial, and political processes. This struggle for dominance has been going on for years. Ysldora is the only female castellan (ruler of a castle) in The Marches. She is the figurehead and president of a sprawling, multi-layered, male-dominated community. Ysldora was given this well-defined role by birth. But how easy is it for a daughter to command the respect and obedience of men?
As Ysldora officiates, she must deflect questions about her legitimacy and authority. Meanwhile, she counters attacks from marauding outlaws; she responds to political challenges that are posed by bellicose regional commands, and she deals with any number of small irritations caused by her big neighbours. Ysldora’s overlord, the Æthel of Cærdamoon, is taken hostage. He could be lost forever. If he is deceased, how can her role be sustained? Can she exercise authority over the domain without the consent and approval of her castle-lord? Furthermore, her deputies now demand punishment for a transgression she executed in a fit of rage. It was a serious crime that might earn her a trip to the gallows, and will no doubt see her stripped of title and rank.
