Overview: Duncan, a gay travel agent, loves celebrating his birthday, especially in New Orleans at Mardi Gras. On the eve of the new millennium, he finds himself on the wrong side of 40 and frets his life is now on the down escalator, headed nowhere. For the first time in his life, he’s not looking forward to his birthday or even partying in the City that Care Forgot.
Despite his misgivings, along with a couple of his quirky thirtysomething friends, Todd and J.M., he once again makes the trek from Wisconsin to New Orleans to celebrate his birthday and Mardi Gras. Another friend, wealthy and handsome David who lives in New York, joins them there. Though he won’t admit it, Duncan has a serious crush on David who has recently broken up with his longtime boyfriend—also Duncan’s longtime friend. When David shows up, he’s with dreamy, young Latino named Salvador.
Nothing seems to work out as Duncan had planned or wanted. Worst of all, he gets to spend very little time with David who’s obviously too infatuated with Salvador. But on Mardi Gras, his wildest dreams seem to come true after he picks up a gorgeous but trashed twink on Bourbon Street. This one-night stand will cost him more than just lost sleep.
Returning home to Madison he seeks solace in his day-to-day routine. He’s actually enjoying his boring, predictable life; making plans for yet another trip, his annual summer rendezvous in Provincetown. But bad news soon arrives and what follows is a story of drugs and kinky sex, betrayal and murder. It will take Duncan on a journey coast to coast, back again to New Orleans and ultimately home. He teams up with Zach, a hunky African-American private eye, to solve a mystery that has many twists and turns. Ultimately, Duncan’s success as an amateur sleuth is almost his undoing. But in the end justice, power and faith triumph—and literally save Duncan’s life.
