1893. The death of a man gains significance when the victim’s proximity to others is learned. Garth follows the silver threads of a tangled web that reveals more than one mystery. There is also the situation with some of his police officers taking bribes to unlawfully incarcerate vulnerable citizens of Candlestick.
Mattie’s plans to wrest control of the Case businesses are put on hold when the life of a dear friend is threatened. Her investigation of others suffering a similar fate will test her courage as she storms a frightful asylum to gather evidence. Effie’s true identity is kept hidden even as word of her innocence is published. It doesn’t stop her from risking exposure as she does whatever she may to discover the location of her missing son.
