Candlelit Smoke and Mirrors (#2)
May 1893. The residents of the Case mansion continue to pool their knowledge and strengths to endure through difficult times. Of course, their concerns about the comfort and safety of others in the city of Candlestick go beyond that of their own. Even in their current reduced circumstances, they wish to offer whatever help they may. To that end, Mrs. Mattie Case hones her amateur sleuthing skills when the new police chief rebuffs her insights into mysterious disappearances.

Chief of police Garth Hawke embarks on an investigation into the disinterest of his police department. Compelled to prove the Case widow wrong about her suppositions, he is drawn into a magic act involving smoke and mirrors that places his own future in peril. Unable to rely on the men who work for him, he must turn elsewhere for assistance. It doesn’t escape him that the person most intent on giving aid has a mysterious past of her own. One that proves even more sensational than any he had imagined.

Frame of Illusion (#3)
1893. Mattie Case finds her limits tested when yet another accusation is thrown at Henry’s feet. Though her husband is beyond suffering the attacks on his character, the pain caused to her son is more than she will tolerate. 1893. A social gathering conjures up a murder that has far reaching implications for the many mysteries surrounding Mattie and Garth. Their recent agreement to work together is tested as they search for the killer some claim cannot be caught pointing to the dancing flame as proof. Can they put aside their distrust to learn the secrets that were carried to more than one grave?

Into the Shadows (#8)
1893. The path to justice proves perilous when the tide is turned against Garth. Worried that his own future now hangs in the balance, he doubles his efforts to find the one woman who holds the key to it all. What he learns will have him questioning everything he believed until now. Can Garth put aside his mistrust long enough to accept the cloak of protection passed to him by Henry Case?

Mattie finds the responsibilities of keeping the Case household together both fulfilling and crushing. Can’t Hold a Candle (#9)
1893. The death of a man gains significance when the victim’s proximity to others is learned. Garth follows the silver threads of a tangled web that reveals more than one mystery. It isn’t only the recent death of a man with a sudden interest in pedestrianism. There is also the situation with some of his police officers taking bribes to unlawfully incarcerate vulnerable citizens of Candlestick.
Mattie’s plans to wrest control of the Case businesses are put on hold when the life of a dear friend is threatened. Her investigation of others suffering a similar fate will test her courage as she storms a frightful asylum to gather evidence. Effie’s true identity is kept hidden even as word of her innocence is published. It doesn’t stop her from risking exposure as she does whatever she may to discover the location of her missing son.
