Overview: And this is what I know: Ari had not only called suddenly in the middle of the night, but she had also left an extremely alarming voice message:
“Stop that. Don’t touch me!” The faint protests of Ari emanate as if the device she was calling from was held far away from her face. Then came strange rustling noises followed by a muted thump. I thought she might have dropped the phone during some sort of physical altercation. Discordant clamoring continued until a sudden, thunderous slam of a door left the rest of the message in unnerving silence.
When Druscilla (Dru) Lipsky heads to Chicago to investigate her best friend’s disappearance, she was ready and willing to do anything to find Ari. Too bad she wasn’t prepared for what anything meant. The deeper she digs, the more she discovers there might be more on the line than just Ari’s life. After uncovering a bundle of ancient pages with incomprehensible inscriptions and an ominous orb, Dru becomes entangled in a web of mysteries and lies.
Assistance arrives in the form of Ash Stryker and John Roy. Despite Ash’s charming, easy going demeanor, Dru can’t shake the feeling he’s somehow involved in Ari’s disappearance. Meanwhile, she struggles to fully confide in the chivalrous Officer John Roy in fear she may drag him unwittingly to his death.
It’s not long before Dru starts to lose her grasp on reality. Visions and delusions of the King in Yellow plague her mind. Will Dru be able to separate fact from fiction, friend from foe, and escape the Windy City with skin and sanity intact?
