Overview: Old Sparky, better known as the Electric Chair was first used on a woman for murdering her husband in1928. The execution took place in Sing Sing prison. The woman was a house wife by the name of Ruth Snyder. Tom Howard a New York Daily News photographer sat in on the execution with a hidden camera strapped to his ankle and snapped a picture and froze the historical moment for posterity. Now in 1959 the infamous chair may again be used on a woman. Her name is June Campbell.
There is a certain finality to having 1,700 volts flow through your body. Once it’s done there isn’t any going back. Innocent or guilty you’re still dead. June Campbell argued she was innocent but the slim facts of the case against her stated otherwise. Even with a famous attorney to defend her she found herself in a hopeless situation. The crime was rushed to judgment for political purposes. Did she commit a crime worthy of electrocution? Her own daughter declared she did.
