Overview: In the days of the old kings of Valoria, after the Great War between elves, humans, dwarves, giants, and orcs, there was a time of relative peace for 2,400 years. But much had been lost and forgotten. The humans multiplied greatly, and the elves diminished in numbers. Dwarves dug great mines and disappeared entirely. Rumors of their annihilation by strange beasts passed on into legends and myths. Magic had become mystic legend and was only known by a few elves and even less humans. The old ways were gone. The time of prosperity and gold brought decadence and power, and greed and slavers.

Afterwards, a cult rose up in the land of Dalantia that used human sacrifice, channeling a dark, forgotten magic. Centered around a priestess queen who practiced strange rituals that are not spoken of. She had a thirst for human blood and power—much like the undead, but human. Through fear her following rapidly grew in unnatural popularity and strength.

Those who stood in the way of this cult were ununified and swiftly defeated by the cult’s powerful mage knights called The Blood Paladins of Dalantia. They had conquered almost all the regions of the known world. They burned the strongholds of those who opposed them and took slaves, concubines, and virgins for sacrifice from every kingdom and land. They imposed taxes on resources and on their subjects throughout. The rule of the empress of blood was complete, except for a few reaches in the far north and south and wild country.

All lands were strictly forbidden from the smithing of new swords, spears, or staves. But in Valoria, after 400 years, in a region close to the farthest northern reaches, there was a small castle keep of Glenclare, that was not destroyed. It kept the town of Hearthshire safe from bandits and mercenaries; for a time, it was peaceful and prosperous. They kept the old ways of Valoria, remaining to the study of steel. Secretly blades were forged for warfare in small numbers to keep the artisans’ ways alive but away from the notice of The Dalantian Empire.

It was in this place that Vandryn was born and grew in his early days. And it was here that he met Zan Cadeyn, the half elf of great renown. I will attempt to recount the story of Vandryn’s and Zan Cadeyn’s beginnings before the curse, the honors, and fame, and tales of glory, riches, horrors, and valor.
