But Benson is a fat fourteen-year-old boy who loves sweets, classical music, Jesus, and other boys — not a combination bound to endear him to his classmates. Benson has much to escape. Alas, St. Finbar’s Seminary, populated by lecherous brothers and neurotic novices, only offers new trials and temptations, the worst of them being Brother Michael, who sees in Benson an easy target. Benson is expelled from St. Finbar’s with dispatch, and finds himself back at school facing the same boys and exams he thought he’d left behind forever. But through a surprising alliance with the star of the senior class — a boy who finds easy everything that Benson struggles to achieve, and who is relaxed about all the things that cause Benson such guilt and anxiety — Benson slowly learns a much needed lesson in the relative values of purity, martyrdom, and self-acceptance. Brothers in Arms is a quick and bright novel, filled with humor and wry observation. It is also painful at times, and a poignant reminder that becoming gay is a lonely business, and not a casual “choice of lifestyles,” as is so often suggested.
