Overview: Jenni L. Walsh spends her days knee deep in words in Philadelphias suburbia. Beyond words, Jenni is a mama (of an feisty three-year-old, an on-the-go one-year-old, and a needy goldendoodle), a wife, a Philly and ‘Nova sports fan, and a lover of carbs and Swedish fish (ideally consumed one after another).
But where did it all begin? Jenni spent her early years dabbling in various forms of writing and with her nose in a book. Her writing chops first began to develop through one-page stories. Never fail, the storyline followed the same progression: girl meets boy, girl marries boy, girl and boy have baby. That’s it. Jenni’s mom treated it like a masterpiece each and every time.
Now Jenni has moved on to stories with a bit more oomph and, for the mamas, her debut novel, Becoming Bonnie, will be released on May 9, 2017 from Tor/Forge (Macmillan), followed by the sequel Being Bonnie in the summer of 2018. For the kiddos, Jenni’s debut middle grade series, Brave Like Me, is forthcoming from Scholastic (Fall, 2018) and will feature true stories from women who, at a young age, accomplished daring feats of perseverance and bravery.
Genre: Historical Fiction
1. Becoming Bonnie:
From debut historical novelist Jenni L. Walsh, Becoming Bonnie is the untold story of how wholesome Bonnelyn Parker became half of the infamous Bonnie and Clyde duo!
The summer of 1927 might be the height of the Roaring Twenties, but Bonnelyn Parker is more likely to belt out a church hymn than sling drinks at an illicit juice joint. She’s a sharp girl with plans to overcome her family’s poverty, provide for herself, and maybe someday marry her boyfriend, Roy Thornton. But when Roy springs a proposal on her, and financial woes jeopardize her ambitions, Bonnelyn finds salvation in an unlikely place: Dallas’s newest speakeasy, Doc’s.
Living the life of a moll at night, Bonnie remains a wholesome girl by day, engaged to Roy, attending school, and working toward a steady future. When Roy discovers her secret life, he embraces it – perhaps too much, especially when it comes to booze and gambling – she tries to make the pieces fit. Maybe she can have it all: the American Dream, the husband, and the intoxicating allure of jazz music. But her life – like her country – is headed for a crash.
—Bonnie Parker is about to meet Clyde Barrow.
2. Side by Side:
Texas: 1931. It’s the height of the Great Depression, and Bonnie is miles from Clyde. He’s locked up, and she’s left waiting, their dreams of a life together dwindling every day. When Clyde returns from prison damaged and distant, unable to keep a job, and dogged by the cops, Bonnie knows the law will soon come for him. But there’s only one road forward for her.
—If the world won’t give them their American Dream, they’ll just have to take it.
