Bones: Survival in a Dystopian World series by Jim Rudnick (#1-#3)
Requirements: Epub reader/Azw3 reader, 2.18 Mb
Overview: Being a youngster in the 1950’s meant that I was a voracious reader in what has been called the Golden Age of Science Fiction. That meant that for me, my heroes were not on the hockey rink or gridiron – but instead in my local Library where at 12 I had a full Adult card (thanks Dad!) and took out more than 5 books a week.
Everyone from Heinlein, Norton, Leiber, Pohl, Anderson, Simak, Asimov, Brackett, Van Vogt and more….I fell in love with and eventually owned Ace Doubles of my own. While I never knew who wrote the Tom Corbett – Space Cadet series, I fell in love with them and they had a place of honor on my own bookcase too!
With that kind of an introduction to Science Fiction, it’s no wonder that when got my writing work done, I turned my own fictional side of my brain to writing same. It’s one thing I know to write – and a totally different matter to release same to the world – something that I’ve just started to work on….suffice it to say my own works are rooted in that Golden Age and it’s that era that I’d like to one day be known as a teensy contributor to in some small way…
Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopia
1. Crash Landing
As the first wisps of atmosphere touched the badly damaged explorer ship, the craft was on it’s own AI–the pilot and nine of the ten occupants were already dead.
The only alive human lay in the robo-doc tank in the rear of the ship where he’d been for almost a full week. He had been injured during an asteroid incursion and had been placed in the robo-doc then. Now he lay half awake, half in a stupor, not knowing that the rest of the Drake’s crew were probably dead.
Boathi sphere ships had come upon the Drake twenty light years out-wards, and had so severely damaged the ship, that even as the pilot lay dying and he kicked it into AI and called on full FTL, their fate looked sealed…
Inside the robo-doc tank, the surviving human lay in the liquid bath surrounding him, and he was still in that stupor of drugged medical aid. While he couldn’t read it, on the interior visor, lay the dashboard with information for the patient—and it appeared he had still another two and a half days in here.
Alone…
Defenseless and in a sealed tank, as the AI would try to keep the robo-doc up and running to enable his recovery…at least that was it’s next task…
2. Forest Empire
Trapped by a tribe of slavers, Javor and his group fight their way free, only to find that one is never truly free. Engaged by the Regime to act as Ambassadors to the Forest Empire, they travel through more than a hundred miles of dense boreal forests only to be warmly received…and then betrayed. Now slaves, the group is made to work on the building of the new Pyramid, by pulling huge stones to the building site and then up a ramp for construction-and the fact that the project is way behind makes the whips of the guards sting even more. When faced with watching a youngster die or doing something, Javor chooses to save her life and in doing so a guard dies. That sentences Javor to the cult’s Mid-Summer games where he will try to outrun the spears of the Shieldsmen-and live…or not…
3. Castle Magic
Being fodder for the Spearmen was one thing, but as Javor was to learn, that meant much more than being able to dodge their spears. And his escape from the Arena meant more than saving his own life—it could mean saving his whole team and that was something he very much wanted as he dodged and ran the volley of spears.
But more than the end of the Forest Empire, was the realization that he and his team would soon be involved with the one city state on Bones, that was magical—at least that’s what the story was. Castle Magic was led by humans who supposedly had magical gifts, who could not be injured or hurt and could disappear at will. Surely, there was a way to defeat these magicians, but as Javor was to learn the truth was not always a part of the story.
Join him and his team as they fight their way across Bones and see what adventures lie ahead—zombies and tribes, magicians and disciples…the list of enemies grows daily on Bones as the Boathi arrive too…
