Bones of Contention: A Creationist Assessment of Human Fossils by Marvin L. Lubenow
Requirements: .ePUB .MOBI Reader | 1.4 MB
Overview: Professor Marvin Lubenow’s Bones of Contention is the standard creationist book on human fossils and the fossils of so-called ‘hominids’, an evolutionists’ term which encompasses humans and supposed human ancestors which are closer to man than the chimpanzee.
The introductory chapter gives an interesting insight in to how palaeontology works, particularly as regards fossils designated ‘hominid’. You might reasonably have assumed these fossils were kept in museums and made available for examination by bona fide researchers. It seems this is not the case at all. They are owned by individual palaeoanthropologists or organisations, who are extremely possessive of them and in general do not allow others to see them – except for those researchers who themselves own an interesting fossil and can negotiate a ‘Show me yours and I’ll show you mine’ deal! This lack of access is important. It means researchers are in nearly all cases restricted to working on plaster reproductions, which are of variable accuracy. Consequently, assertions about human evolution made on the basis of these fossils cannot be properly tested. The book gives the example of Piltdown Man, which visiting palaeoanthropologists were only allowed to see for a brief few minutes before the curators whisked the original back into its secure storage and substituted casts (the version on public display was always a copy). Thus Piltdown Man was never meticulously examined, and the fraud persisted for decades. The situation is no different today.
The main part of the book is a critique of the hypothesis of human evolution. Professor Lubenow’s treatment is thorough. He goes into considerable detail on all the important fossil finds and the way they have been dragooned into the great cause of mapping an evolutionary pathway from apes to man. Crucially, he covers the full history of this interpretive process. This history is a revelation. It lays bare the speculative nature of what these palaeoanthropologists are professing and how strongly their thinking is led by hypothesis rather than observation; human evolution from apes is taken as irrefutable fact, and the data is squeezed into that mould. For example, he cites cases where fossil sites have been re-dated over the years for no other reason than to preserve whatever model of human evolution was current at the time.
