The centrepiece of this collection is ‘The Blazing World’, the only known Utopian fiction by a seventeenth century woman writer, an inventive and extravagant portrayal of the rise of a woman to absolute power. Published in 1666, the year of the Great Fire of London, ‘The Blazing World’ is an early example of science fiction, perhaps best known to modern readers through Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
