Overview: Something dark is coming. Something dark and sweet. And can a city, that’s already on the brink of destruction, withstand it? Can Sugaredge, a Victorian city in a parallel universe, filled with vampires, elves, humans and other magical races, be saved?
Vivien only ever wanted one thing: to be part of the Togetherness, the organization that runs the city of Sugaredge. But she’s out of time. Soon she will be wed to the horrible vampire Derrick Friedrich and her life will be over. So in a last attempt to safe herself, she escapes Derrick’s clutches and joins the Togetherness Trials, to prove she is worthy. To prove she can be one of them.
But there is just one problem:
Like many other people in Sugaredge, Vivien is born with a defect: she can’t speak. She’s a mute.
And not only does that make people prejudiced against her. It’s also harder for her to do the magic she needs to prove herself.
But then, all of that doesn’t matter anymore. During the trials, Vivien gets strange hallucinations and when she runs back to the main hallway of the Togetherness building, she discovers something gruesome:
Five dead mutes hanging from the ceiling. One word written on their bodies: speak.
The matter is soon hushed up by the Togetherness. They tell people to go home, don’t think about it anymore and the next day there is an article in the newspaper that says the mutes were unconscious all along… not dead.
But Vivien doesn’t believe one bit of it and with the help of an older lady who is quite good at mind control, she tries to get to the bottom of the situation. Slowly, but steadily she spirals into a dark adventure, discovers the city’s secrets and finds that no one is to be trusted…
