Requirements: epub reader, 456kb
Overview: It is 1999 and the last of three major Border Patrol operations from the past several years–Operation Safeguard–is ramping up throughout Tucson Sector including in the small border town of Nogales, Arizona. Throughout the past decade, illegal border crossings along the United States’ Southwest border have surged, leading to the deployment of more Border Patrol agents, deterrence technologies and resources than ever before. Into this environment steps Billy Maddox, a young man from a ranching family and who becomes part of this demographic of new agents hired and trained to protect the United States from illegal crossings. He is impulsive and easy to anger, however, and has a history of lost jobs that has recently made his wife threaten to leave him.
Billy’s younger brother was killed years ago during a shootout between drug mules and Border Patrol agents on the family ranch in Cochise County, Arizona. After his parents sold the ranch and fled to Tucson to escape memories of the tragedy, Billy is raised by a dominating and xenophobic father. Hector Maddox teaches Billy to despise Mexicans and others who would cross into the United States.
Now that Billy is 23, and has emerged as an adult in every way except in his emotions, he returns to the same border environment that robbed his brother’s life and began the Maddox family’s downward spiral. And yet how can he respond? He has his own family now, including a young son, and any impulsiveness or inappropriate behavior that threatens his job will also threaten everything he has won to date despite a very hard upbringing. How will he fare?
