Bare Nell by Leslie Thomas
Requirements: .MP3 reader, 345.69 MB
Overview: Like in many of his books, Leslie Thomas writes as much of a travel diary as a novel. In this Devon, London and France play characters within the story as much as the main character Nell. Unlike most of his books however, the main character is female which allows him to explore the subject of prostitution from a woman’s perspective with his usual whit and humour. Originally released in 1978 and set to begin with around 1943-44 when the Americans arrived in Devon; it charts the life of Nell Luscombe who grows from the innocence of a young girl at that time through the next twenty years or so as she rises and falls through marriages, sex and relationships. Compared to novels released now, it feels a little dated – not in its writing which is both excellent and very funny but rather in the ideas and values that are presented to the reader. It feels like reading a piece of near modern history.
