#1: A giant fungus escapes from its containment in a maximum-security laboratory, pitting the B.P.R.D. against the frog-men they faced ten years ago in the original Hellboy series, Seed of Destruction. Following the success of last year’s B.P.R.D. oneshots, Mike Mignola’s Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense launch into the first of a series of miniseries. Drawn by Guy Davis, the artist of last year’s B.P.R.D.: Dark Waters, and written by Mignola himself, A Plague of Frogs returns to the roots of the characters in this first in this five-issue series.
#2: The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense traces the disappearance of a giant fungus to a deserted town. Separated from the group when their helicopter crashes, Roger the Homunculus, enthralled by a mysterious child, winds up hanging from the neck in an abandoned building. Meanwhile, the rest of the B.P.R.D. team lies unconscious at the crash site, and Abe Sapien dreams of underwater terrors.
#3: While Roger hangs lifeless, the other members of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense recover from their helicopter crash only to see Johann torn to shreds by the town’s only inhabitants—a cult of frog men led by a shrouded freak, who erupts in a fleshy explosion. The roof comes down on a chained Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman, and only Kate Corrigan, the only normal human in the crew, remains free, hopelessly trying to raise help on the crashed copter’s radio. It’s the return of the frog men from Seed of Destruction, the most disastrous B.P.R.D. mission since Wake the Devil.
#4: Liz Sherman is set upon by a cemetery full of fungus-driven zombies, and Abe Sapien uncovers the connection between this new generation of monsters and the B.P.R.D.’s old enemy Rasputin. But as the frogmen begin their rituals to raise the old gods, one of the disciples makes good on the threat Rasputin leveled against Abe years ago in Hellboy: Wake the Devil.
#5: As Abe lies dying, one of the greatest secrets of the Hellboy series is revealed.
