Overview: Women’s rights juggernaut, Emily Churchill, is arrested in northern Thailand on charges of human trafficking. She is processed on the fringes of the system and handed over to the Thai secret police before she can contact the American embassy. An affiliate stringer for a British newsroom witnesses the events and posts a story.
Industrial spy, Gabriel Lynch, was once Emily’s foster brother. As a teenager, his shot at happiness with the Churchill clan ended in a bonfire of goodwill when he tried to seduce Emily in the back of a parked car. In Washington, scatter-shot news about her arrest compels him to revisit his past and make a few clandestine inquiries.
After being blocked by the State Department and shunned by Thailand Embassy staff, Gabriel teams up with Emily’s best friend, Sabine Delaney. Sabine, a journalist crippled by an IED in Somalia, works her contacts to untangle Emily’s motives for traveling to Southeast Asia. The results are unsettling. Early evidence indicates Emily’s work has been ruffling affluent feathers in D.C. A powerful beltway player, possibly even political king-maker, Hank Kruger, seems to be stage-managing events in Thailand. Many on The Hill consider Kruger the most dangerous man in America.
More information begins to link back to Kruger and his company, oil vampire, Paragon International. Almost immediately Gabriel and Sabine find themselves on a mortal collision course with a whole coterie of Kruger’s corrupt legislators; men and women arrogantly certain of their own success and brazenly indifferent to the lives of others.
And in a pestilential prison camp on the edges of the Golden Triangle, while the monsoons rage, Emily unknowingly holds the key to her own freedom. Or the noose for her own neck.
